Dr. John Lantos
Hi, Congressman Yoder. It's your friend John Lantos, a pediatrician in your district. I want to talk to you today about health insurance for children. Pretty soon, you will have to vote on whether or not to reauthorize the Children's Health Insurance Program, or CHIP. CHIP provides health insurance for about 9 million kids in the United States. and about a quarter million, 250,000 kids in Kansas alone. It provides comprehensive coverage for these kids, immunizations, medications, dental care, emergency department visits, and many other things that children need. I really hope that you will vote to reauthorize CHIP. Children need this program. But I'll be honest with you, I'm a little worried. You recently voted for the Republican health care bill that would have cut Medicaid funding by a billion dollars and taken health insurance away from about 24 million Americans. When you voted for that, you said that you were battling against socialized medicine. I think you got that exactly wrong. This is not socialized medicine. When voters want to help their friends and neighbors get health insurance for their children, That's not socialized medicine. That's government of the people, by the people, and for the people. That's what we elected you to do. That's democracy. That's human rights. That's the American way.
