Our certificate program in pediatric bioethics is the only ethics training program in the world that focuses exclusively on pediatric issues. Doctors, nurses, and other child health professionals from all over the world come together to discuss issues such as futility and moral distress, brain death and coma, vaccine hesitancy, decisions about life-sustaining treatment, research ethics, resource allocation, and the social determinants of health. Here's how the course works. We start with a weekend in Kansas City, meeting face to face, and studying some classic articles and cases that shaped pediatric bioethics. Each week for nine months, we read assigned articles and discuss them online. Students join the discussions at times that are convenient for them. We also have live, interactive webinars with leading thinkers on currently controversial topics. We've discussed everything from vaccine mandates to the ethical implications of new scientific evidence about the dangers of high school football. The weekly webinars and the discussions are archived on our website. Each student designs and creates a research project and works with a mentor during the year. Some students collect data, others review literature. At the end of the nine-month program, students gather again in Kansas City to present their projects to one another and to the faculty. Many of the projects lead to publications in peer-reviewed journals. Always, the dialogue is lively. The topics challenging and the insights gained help students become better clinicians, better teachers, and better bioethicists. We have special scholarships for students from low-income countries. Students have come from Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Central Europe. We also have a nurse leadership program to help nurses develop bioethics education and programming that addresses the unique issues that nurses face. Want to enroll?
